Bakery on O’Connell

In need of a meal at 2am on a Saturday morning? Have the sudden craving for a pie floater? Then look no further than Bakery on O’Connell!

The famous 24-hour bakery  has been a favourite of mine for years. They sell over 200 products, ranging from pies, pasties, and sausage rolls, to cakes, doughnuts, and sandwiches. You can also purchase finger food for all your catering needs.

On my visit today, I purchased a plain beef pie and Nutella heart. The pie was delicious as usual, with a light sprinkling of pepper, and firm but flaky pastry. The best part about the Bakery’s pie is that they put just the right amount of meat in it so it doesn’t slop all over your hands and clothes! The Nutella Heart, on the other hand, is a true treat. Like the name suggests, it is a heart shaped doughnut filled with Nutella.

I like to think I was one of the first to discover the little gem that is bad for the hips but oh so good for the tastebuds! The Nutella Heart has since developed a cult following here in Adelaide, with many of my friends posting photos of it on Instagram and Facebook.

One comment I must make is that the doughnut seems to have shrunk in size since I first started buying it. However, from my health’s perspective this is probably a good thing!

High Tea at the Intercontinental Hotel Adelaide

Here in Adelaide, there seems to been a current boom in the popularity of high tea. Women especially are celebrating special events with a glass of sparkling and a tier of treats. So it comes as no surprise when my mum decided to have a high tea for her milestone birthday!

A feast fit for a queen!

On our arrival, the Intercontinental Hotel staff offered us a glass of sparkling wine, which of course every guest accepted! A few minutes later, our three-tiered stands were brought out, with one shared between two. A huge fan of seafood, I began with the Tasmanian smoked salmon in mountain bread. The addition of watercress and horseradish made it a delightful way to start the afternoon festivities. I then moved on to the prosciutto in sour dough (yum) and the cucumber and sour cream sandwich (which unfortunately was very stale on top).

The scones were my next victims and these were served with a range of South Australian Beerenberg jams and fresh whipped cream. While there were three different types of scones (plain, sultana, and blueberry), I must admit they weren’t like the fresh scones my grandma makes. Yes they were a nice treat, but they did look store-bought if you get my drift!

With the attentive and friendly staff constantly filling our tea cups, I was pretty full by this stage! I did manage to eat the carrot cake and flourless chocolate brownie, but was allowed to take home the macaron, apricot slice, and lemon meringue tart. These were all rather delicious as any sweet-tooth would say!

While the crockery and cutlery were the usual hotel standard, the ambiance of the Atrium Lounge was rather enjoyable. A pianist enhanced the mood as we all tucked into our high tea. The $35 price tag was about right for what we received on this pleasurable afternoon.

All washed down with a few cups of tea!

Welcome!

I love food. I love writing. I am also one of those (annoying) people who takes photos of the food served to her in restaurants.

Hopefully these three traits allow me to bring you some helpful information about eating places in Adelaide and other cities around the world.

Enjoy my exploration of the wonderful world of food!
